
Seko Fofana has brought his Ivory Coast career to a close at the age of 31, choosing to retire from international football before the Elephants begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Fofana ends nine-year international career
The Manchester City academy graduate made his senior debut for Ivory Coast in 2017. Across nine years, he collected 34 caps and scored seven goals, with the high point of his international career coming when he helped the Elephants win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on home ground.

World Cup appearance followed continental triumph
Fofana was also part of Ivory Coast’s 2026 World Cup squad, which progressed to the last 32 before its campaign ended. At club level, he is currently on loan with Porto from Rennes, and he explained that his next priority would be giving his full attention to club football.

The midfielder described winning the Africa Cup of Nations as a childhood ambition fulfilled, adding that the achievement would remain an enduring memory for millions of Ivorians. He also thanked his teammates, the coaching and support staff, and the fans whose encouragement sustained the team.
Fofana said he would remain the Elephants’ leading supporter and expressed his excitement at watching the next generation create its own legacy, stressing that Ivory Coast possesses considerable talent.
