Diego Simeone has confirmed that Barcelona-linked forward Julián Álvarez will miss Atlético Madrid’s LaLiga trip to Sevilla today, while insisting the Argentina international remains central to his plans for the season.
Álvarez missed Friday’s training session with his teammates for the third consecutive day, fuelling suggestions that he could be attempting to secure a move away from Atlético before the transfer window shuts on Sept. 1.
“My position has not changed,” Simeone said. “Sportingly, I want to support him in every way possible so he can remain the decisive player he has been for us. But Julián will not be involved tomorrow.
“When he comes back to work with the group, we will offer him the same support as always and ensure he feels as important as he has felt — because that is exactly what he is to this team.”
Atlético stated earlier this week that Álvarez was “unwell” on Wednesday. The forward is reportedly keen to leave the club and move to domestic rivals Barcelona.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta renewed his club’s interest in Álvarez this week. Atlético responded with a statement insisting there was a “zero percent chance” of the striker joining Barça, while describing themselves as “victims” of the episode and claiming they had suffered both financial and social damage.
“The club was very clear and decisive in explaining the situation surrounding Julián and what will follow,” Simeone said.
Álvarez made his first appearance of the campaign when he came off the bench in the second half of Sunday’s 2-2 draw at home to Villarreal.
The former Manchester City player was jeered by supporters before, during and after the match at the Metropolitano. He subsequently walked off the pitch on his own while his teammates stayed behind to applaud the crowd.
Despite the strained atmosphere, Simeone believes Álvarez can rebuild his relationship with the Atlético supporters.
“As long as you have good health, everything in life can be repaired,” the Argentine coach said.
Simeone also underlined the importance of Alexander Sørloth, who is currently unavailable because of a muscular injury, and Álvarez, identifying the pair as the attacking partnership Atlético require this season.
Asked which qualities he wants from a key striker, Simeone replied: “The qualities of Julián Álvarez and Sørloth.”
