South Africa Beat Nigeria 2-1 to End Super Falcons’ World Cup Hopes

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana eliminated Nigeria from the race for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over the Super Falcons in Casablanca.

Play-off place at stake

The decisive qualifier at Stade Moulay Rachid followed quarter-final exits for both teams at WAFCON 2026. Nigeria had been edged 1-0 by Cameroon, while South Africa lost 2-1 against hosts Morocco.

Thursday’s winner would claim Africa’s place in the six-team FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament, which represents the last remaining pathway to the finals in Brazil in 2027.

  • Nigeria’s WAFCON 2026 run ended with a 1-0 quarter-final defeat by Cameroon.
  • South Africa were beaten 2-1 by Morocco in the other quarter-final.
  • The Casablanca play-off winner advanced to the inter-confederation tournament.

South Africa seize control after the break

The opening 45 minutes produced no goals as both back lines remained disciplined and denied the opposing attack clear openings.

Banyana Banyana needed only four minutes after half-time to take the lead. Forward Thembi Kgatlana supplied a composed finish, giving South Africa the advantage.

Captain Refiloe Jane then increased the margin in the 77th minute after South Africa combined effectively to create the opportunity.

Late Nigeria response falls short

The Super Falcons reduced the deficit late in the contest when midfielder Christy Ucheibe converted from the penalty spot.

Nigeria committed more players to attack in search of a leveller during the closing period, but South Africa resisted the pressure and preserved its lead.

The result sends South Africa into the FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament, while Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup has ended.
