Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been given a clear path to the 2028 Olympic women’s football tournament in Los Angeles, with the 10-time African champions aiming to qualify for successive Games after appearing in Paris in 2024.
Key takeaways
- Nigeria will meet Comoros in the second qualifying round on 9 and 13 October.
- Both matches are scheduled for Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.
- The Falcons must win four knockout rounds to claim one of Africa’s two Olympic berths.
- DR Congo or Morocco would be Nigeria’s potential third-round opponent.
- The final qualifying phase is set for 23 November to 4 December 2027.
Route to Los Angeles
Nigeria’s campaign begins in the second round against Comoros, with the two-leg contest taking place at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on 9 October and 13 October.
The Falcons are among the three highest-ranked teams in the African qualifying field and therefore entered the competition at this stage. Comoros reached the round after overpowering Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.
Four home-and-away knockout rounds stand between Nigeria and one of the two places reserved for Africa at the Los Angeles tournament. If the Falcons eliminate Comoros, they will advance to the third round, which is scheduled from 23 February to 6 March 2027. Their opponent there will be either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.
Later qualifying rounds
A place in the fourth round would bring a tie against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali. Those fixtures are due to be played between 4 and 12 October 2027.
The decisive stage of the qualification programme is scheduled for 23 November to 4 December 2027. Nigeria could face Guinea, Cameroon, DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic, Algeria or Burkina Faso in that final round.
