President Bola Tinubu has praised Team Nigeria after the country secured 24 medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, while reaffirming his government’s commitment to advancing sports development. The message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Nigeria concluded the Games with 10 gold medals, seven silver medals and seven bronze medals. Tinubu said the overall result demonstrated the resilience, discipline and excellence of the nation’s athletes.
He applauded the competitors for carrying Nigeria’s flag with honour and dignity, adding that the experience they gained in Glasgow would provide a platform for success at future events and encourage young Nigerians. Whether they stood on the podium or produced courageous performances during competition, he said, every member of the team had represented the country with pride, dignity and honour.
Tinubu also recognised the contributions of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission in supporting the athletes. He called on Team Nigeria’s members to maintain their focus as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible,” the President said.
He repeated his administration’s determination to build a stronger sporting sector through continued investment. Tinubu said the government would work to reinforce sports institutions, upgrade training facilities and expand opportunities for talented Nigerian athletes to succeed at continental and international level.
