Trabzonspor have turned down head coach Fatih Tekke’s “emotional” resignation following their Europa League elimination on Thursday night.
The Turkish Super Lig club were beaten 4-0 by Ferencvaros in Hungary, resulting in a 5-0 aggregate defeat in the play-off round.
After the loss, Tekke submitted his resignation. The 48-year-old had guided Trabzonspor to third place in the league last season.
However, the club refused to accept his decision, explaining that it had been made under the “intense emotional impact” of the European exit.
Trabzonspor will now enter the Europa Conference League instead this season.
The seven-time Turkish champions have made a series of high-profile additions during the summer transfer window, bringing in Premier League winners Mohamed Salah and Fabinho. Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has also returned to the club on loan.
Salah, now 34, made the surprise move to Trabzonspor last month after reaching a mutual agreement with Liverpool to end his contract at the conclusion of last season.
