U.S. President Donald Trump is set to attend the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at the New York–New Jersey stadium on Sunday, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Leavitt said she expected the visit to be a fitting finish to the tournament. “We look forward to the final match on Sunday, and I know the president looks forward to attending,” she said. “His attendance will cap what has been the most watched, most secure, and most successful World Cup in American history.”
Leavitt did not indicate whether Trump has a preferred team for the championship showdown, but encouraged questions. “I’m sure he’ll have a fun answer for you,” she added.
In addition to the match, the U.S. president will also attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on Friday, Leavitt said.
The World Cup trophy itself will make its way to the stadium in a custom Louis Vuitton trunk, with the French luxury label again tasked with creating the carry case for the sport’s most coveted prize. The design includes a golden “V” for “Victory” across the front, alongside “Vuitton,” complemented by the brand’s signature monogram pattern and gold-plated brass corner guards.
Inside, the trunk is lined with beige leather and features a commemorative patch marking the partnership between Louis Vuitton and FIFA. It will be the fifth straight tournament in which the company has produced a trophy trunk, following the editions used at the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Louis Vuitton CEO and Chairman Pietro Beccari praised the long-running relationship, saying in a statement: “For over a decade, Louis Vuitton and FIFA have shared an unwavering commitment to excellence, bound by a shared belief in sport’s power to inspire and bring people together.”
Luxury brands have increasingly attached themselves to major sporting moments, with Tiffany & Co. producing the prize for the Super Bowl—now officially called the Vince Lombardi Trophy—since the first game in 1967. Louis Vuitton has also built custom trophy trunks for major Grand Prix events through a 10-year partnership with Formula 1.
Still, there is only one World Cup trophy for the quadrennial global tournament, and it is typically kept at the FIFA Museum in Zurich. That makes the chance to design its bespoke travel case a particularly notable honour for the fashion house.
