Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and striker Mason Greenwood have both been punished by UEFA after incidents surrounding the Turkish club’s Champions League play-off win at Olympique Lyonnais last month.
Post-match confrontation in Lyon
The disciplinary action followed Fenerbahce’s 2-1 victory in Lyon, where Guendouzi and Greenwood were alleged to have made gestures intended to provoke the home supporters.
Tensions boiled over after the final whistle, when a mass confrontation broke out as Guendouzi, the French midfielder, was leaving the field.
UEFA penalties for the Fenerbahce players
UEFA imposed the following sanctions:
- Guendouzi received a €50,000 ($58,060.00) fine for insulting people at the match, inciting spectators and breaching standards of proper conduct. He was also banned for four UEFA club competition fixtures.
- Greenwood was fined €30,000 and suspended for one game for failing to comply with the governing body’s basic conduct rules.
Two of Guendouzi’s four suspended matches will only be activated if he breaches the regulations during a 12-month probation period. Greenwood’s one-game suspension is likewise conditional on a one-year probationary term.
Club sanctions and Champions League progression
UEFA also disciplined Fenerbahce and Lyon over crowd trouble, objects being thrown, the use of pyrotechnics and other breaches of match-conduct regulations.
Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was given a five-match suspension for serious assault. Two matches of that punishment were suspended for one year.
Despite the disorder, Fenerbahce secured a place in the Champions League league phase by completing a 3-2 aggregate victory.
