Uzoma Named Falconets Captain as Olabiyi Steps Up for U20 World Cup

Christiana Uzoma has been appointed captain of Nigeria’s Falconets for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, with Alaba Olabiyi named vice-captain after regular skipper Joy Igbokwe was ruled out.

Leadership change

Igbokwe, Farida Opeyemi Abdulwahab and one other player could not obtain the visas required to attend the tournament. Their absence prompted the change before Nigeria’s opening Group F fixture against Spain on September 7.

Uzoma will therefore lead the two-time World Cup runners-up, while Olabiyi is set to provide important support both on and off the field.

As Uzoma plays in goal, Olabiyi may be called upon to communicate with the match officials during incidents occurring at the opposite end of the pitch.

Final preparation match

  1. The revised leadership team will face its next test today when Nigeria meet Korea Republic in their last friendly before the World Cup.
  2. The fixture at the Remes Sports Leisure and Spa Stadium gives the Falconets another chance to sharpen their preparations after they defeated hosts Poland 1-0 on Friday.
  3. Mary Mamudu settled that contest by scoring in first-half stoppage time at the Municipal Stadium in Brzeg.
  4. The Korea Republic game is expected to be Nigeria’s final competitive examination before the squad turns its full attention to the Group F tournament schedule.
  5. Aside from tactical work, the match should allow Uzoma and Olabiyi to grow into their new duties after the disruption created by Igbokwe’s absence.

Nigeria’s Group F schedule

Nigeria will compete in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia.

  1. The Falconets open against Spain on September 7.
  2. China PR will provide the second group-stage opposition on September 10.
  3. New Caledonia will be Nigeria’s final Group F opponent on September 13.

Nigeria have twice finished as runners-up at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, reaching the final in 2010 and again in 2014.
