Matt Donohue, the video assistant referee involved in Erling Haaland’s winning goal during Manchester City’s 1-0 derby victory against Manchester United, has not been appointed to a Premier League match next weekend.
Assistant VAR Blake Antrobus has likewise received no fixture assignment. The decision follows an admission from refereeing body Pro Ref that the video officials were wrong to validate Haaland’s decisive strike.
Chief refereeing officer Howard Webb and his management team made the call, and neither Donohue nor Antrobus is expected to officiate again before the international break has ended.
Haaland’s goal in the second half was first disallowed for offside. It was then overturned after a VAR check concluded that the Norway forward had remained in an onside position.
Pro Ref later acknowledged that the review had overlooked the influence of Haaland’s team-mate Enzo Fernandez, who had tried to play the ball while standing offside.
