Real Madrid have ended the uncertainty surrounding Vinicius Jr’s future by agreeing a contract extension that will keep the Brazil winger at the Spanish club until June 2032.
The 26-year-old has been a key part of Madrid’s attacking line in recent seasons and had attracted reported interest from English champions Arsenal. His previous deal was scheduled to run out in June 2027.
In a club statement, Real confirmed that the new agreement binds Vinicius to the team through June 30, 2032, describing him as one of the defining players of one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.
Vinicius arrived from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2018 and has since produced 128 goals and 100 assists for the Madrid outfit. Reports in Spain and Britain had pointed to lengthy negotiations over improved terms, with Arsenal monitoring developments and considering a possible approach.
The renewal also protects Real from the risk of losing one of their most valuable performers without a transfer fee when his former contract expired.
Vinicius endured a demanding summer with Brazil at the World Cup, where the national team’s campaign ended with a last-16 defeat by Norway. During his Madrid career, he has collected a substantial haul of silverware, including two Champions League victories and three LaLiga titles.
The forward will now work with Jose Mourinho for the first time after the Portuguese coach began a second spell in charge of Real in June. Mourinho’s return followed a below-par season for the record 15-time European champions: they finished behind arch-rivals Barcelona in LaLiga, were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals and ended the campaign without a major trophy.
Retaining Vinicius is the latest major move in an energetic close season for Madrid. The club have also added winger Yan Diomande, midfielder Bernardo Silva, centre-back Ibrahima Konate, left-back Marc Cucurella and wing-back Denzel Dumfries as they prepare for the new campaign.
