The second WAMUFAT/Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) Annual Sports Fiesta has ended at the Agroterra Sport Complex in Joga-Orile, Yewaland, Ogun State, following five days of sporting contests, mentoring and youth-focused development programmes.
More than 300 children between six and 16 years old, representing six states in Nigeria’s South-West, participated in football, athletics, chess, netball, golf, lawn tennis and ayo. The programme also featured organised sessions on leadership, mentorship and education.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, NSSF President Olabisi Joseph restated the federation’s determination to identify and nurture talent at school and grassroots level. She said the NSSF would continue working with people and organisations committed to strengthening school sports and helping young athletes become the champions of the future.
Joseph also appealed to public institutions and private investors to back programmes that unite sporting development and education, warning that young athletes need lasting pathways and opportunities to progress.
WAMUFAT founder Fatimo Muhammed promised that the camp would become a permanent event on the region’s sporting calendar. She further urged Nigerians, especially former athletes living abroad, to contribute to the growth of grassroots sport across the country.
Abdulrasheed Afonja, chairman of Agroterra Resort, said the facility would continue to give priority to hosting the camp while its central purpose remained the empowerment of young people.
Among the dignitaries present were Oba Saka Adeola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, and Dr Lukmon Kiadese, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Education.
The five-day gathering concluded with a Community Race Day followed by an awards presentation. Participants who stood out during the programme were recognised with certificates and cash rewards.
