Heading to the Vodacom Durban July, but still unsure what to wear? Acclaimed SA designers Gideon and Andre Martin give us some last-minute style tips on what will be hot on the racecourse on Saturday.

What can we expect from the Durban July fashion experience this year?

Andre: Guys will be wearing more natural fabrics, tailored suits, skinny bottoms and fitted jackets. They’ll be using a lot of colour in their accessories – belts and shoes – you’ll find a lot of red shoes, green shoes, and winter colours.

Gideon: I think to add to that, in terms of accessories they’ll have bow ties, some skinny ties, scarves, paperboy caps, fitted jackets in colour, very natural fabrics and chinos that may be rolled up with brogues and that sort of thing.

Any tips for those still feeling clueless about what to wear and where to get it?

Andre: Contact a designer, even if the designer is not going to make anything for you, contact one about the trends and what to wear. You could tell him what your body shape is and he could advise you on what suit to wear, also on what colour, and where to get accessories to help you with your outfit. Don’t go literal on the theme. Don’t come in Checkers packets or in leaves or grass – it’s nice to be stylish and wear a dark tone with bright colours as accessories.

Gideon: I think basically just dress for your body shape. Do what works for your body – especially when it comes to the girls, because I know a lot of them think they’re fat – and they’re not! Bring the theme out with your accessories and make sure you have a comfortable pair of shoes. Flats are so in at the moment so there’s no need for you to kill yourself. Also, take something warm. Make sure you feel comfortable and wear an interesting, fabulous hat.

Both Andre and Gideon agree that punters and aspiring fashion designers alike are in for a treat on Saturday, especially from the local designers.

“Durban designers hold their own, we inspire people from out of town, we kick ass,” said Gideon.

“People definitely get inspired by Durban and by Durban people … I think we want it more because it’s not at our fingertips so we have to work that bit harder, and it shows.”
