All the juice from the 2016 Feather Awards

The shade! The spice! The tea! It all went down at this year's Feather Awards and we've got the juice.

The people who know me often go on about how shady and spicy I am but after experiencing my first ever Chevy Feather Awards, it’s safe to say that they have no idea how spicy things can get!

Hosted at the Theater on Track in Midrand by Lumko Johnson & Khanya Mkhangisa, the 8th annual awards ceremony was on fire!

Which was a good thing considering what a disaster the red carpet was. And the organizers weren’t even to blame, it was those damn photographers who will push, pull, kick, trip and shove just to get their picture.

Keeping in mind that 2016 was one hell of a year for all of us, Lumko and Khanya did a countdown of the year’s biggest hashtags.

They kicked off with #MCM and showed love to Cassper Nyovest, Wade van Niekerk and DJ Black Coffee.

Their other top hashtags included #PayBackTheMoney, which they used to throw shade at Ghetto Ruff's Lance Stehr who still owes a few people some money as well as Trompies' Eugene who reportedly owes R42K in pap geld.

They continued the countdown with #90PercentLocal #Nonke #FeesMustFall #TBT #QueerLivesMatter #WCW #OpenUpTheIndustry and the year’s number one TT: #ShowUsTheReciepts

I would repeat some of their shady commentary but there might be kids reading this…

We were also treated to a powerful opening performance by Kelly Khumalo featuring some of the night’s LGBTQ guests and activists as well as a sultry opening performance of Lady Marmalade featuring KB, Kelly Khumalo, Shenay O’Brien and Winnie Khumalo.

There was an interim performance by the country’s first gay choir, the Mzansi Gay Choir ( which is like the new directions from Glee, only without women) as well as performances by Naak MusiQ, Dbn Nytz, Dr. Malinga and Feathers Musician of the Year, uBabes uBabes uBabes Wodumo!

Mozambique's LAMBDA received special recognition for their work decriminalizing and legalizing same sex relationships in Mozambique.

Former Banyana Banyana player and activist, Eudy Simelane, was posthumously awarded the prestigious Feather of the Year award which was collected by her parents following an incredibly moving tribute.

The Feather’s aren’t just an award ceremony and they made sure to remind us of this by sharing a bit of the work they've been doing with their road shows proving that it really does take a community to get here.
