What makes a great radio personality? Well, according to Google, the list is quite long. You have to understand your audience, be in charge, break the rules… It goes on and on.
But these ZAlebs have effortlessly mastered the art. They have a great radio presence that keeps the listeners coming back, perhaps because of their radiant and inviting personalities.
Here are some of Mzansi’s most entertaining radio personalities.
When Lootlove parted ways with Metro FM in 2020, many of her loyal listeners were heartbroken. For four years, she and her co-host DJ Speedsta had entertained fans with their Hip Hop show 'Absolute Hip Hop', a role for which she won multiple accolades.
But her light would shine even brighter, and we all knew it. She soon went international, and currently hosts a show on Apple Music's first global radio show for African music, Africa Now Radio. She has already interacted with the big names in African music, including Nigeria's Olamide, Tanzania's Diamond Platnumz and our own Black Motion. Onwards and upwards, queen!

Anele Mdoda has caught heat for different reasons many times. But regardless of how you feel about her as a person, you cannot deny that she is one of Mzansi’s most entertaining radio personalities.
Not only is she gripping, she is also a natural born comedian. She often regales us with stories of her latest escapades, but nothing can take the cake quite like her story about the time her underwear almost gave her a heart attack. But you would have to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth – we could never tell it like she does.
Dineo Ranaka has had quite the radio career. Her portfolio spans years, starting from Yfm where she co-hosted the afternoon drive show ‘Essential Rush’ alongside Chilli M. She was so good at the job that she took over the show when her co-host left, and she has been all the way up ever since.
As of 2022, Ranaka is with Metro FM, where she presents #AskAMan, whose goal is to entertain and inform young women aged between 24 to 35 years of age. While her conversation is interesting, as is the show, it is her unconventional opinions that often ignite an uproar in the country. Whichever way you cut it, though, there’s never a dull moment with Dineo around.

A while back, when someone said you were meant for radio, they meant you were ugly. Well, the exact saying is “you have a face for radio”, but still, Mohale showed up and proved the stereotype wrong. He is very easy on the eyes, but I suppose that does not matter for a radio presenter, does it?
Even so, he is the full package. He is famous for his morning show, 'The Breakfast Show', with Pamela Mtanga on Opulence Radio. As the two of them navigate different topics, the two of them share not only some laughs and relatable moments, but quite a few nuggets of wisdom as well. No wonder we keep tuning in week after week.

Dj Lamiez Holworthy
DJ Lamiez is one of Mzansi’s favourite DJs, and her sunshine personality is just one of the reasons why. It may also be part of why she has been so successful in her radio career, although we have to also give credit to her impeccable work ethic.
She made a particularly great impact with her lockdown house party mixes, which made many fans feel a little less lonely during long periods of quarantine. With her pure soul, we really do wish Lamiez the very best in her career.

Thando "Thabooty" Thabethe
Thando Thabethe joined the 947 family in 2021, continuing her illustrious radio career. She replaced DJ Fresh and Euphonik after they were kicked off for rape allegations. Although the two had quite the loving followership, Thabooty has done a great job with the 947 Drive with Thando.
The multitalented babe is fun and witty, and alongside her co-host Alex Caige, she has become one of our favourite people to drive with.
Pearl Thusi has to be one of Mzansi’s most interesting celebrities, even outside of the radio personality category. Following her on any social media platform will treat you to her big personality.
Naturally, she brings this to her radio shows as well, accounting for her meteoric rise to the top. But Pearl was forced to leave her last radio gig at Metro FM, reportedly because of a lot of feuding between her and Bonang. She has since said she would rather die than return to the channel, which reflects just the kind of strong personality characteristic of our most gripping radio personalities.
We miss Pearl terribly on radio, and hope things line up soon for her return.

Queen B's radio career has been so successful that she went international, a feat that not many Mzansi celebrities have managed to achieve. As of March 2021, she was the host of a show on iHeart Radio.
However, she didn't last long in the role, as she announced that she was shelving her TV and radio careers to focus on her alcohol brand, House of BNG. Fans have been begging her to return to the two channels, or at least start a YouTube channel so they can see or hear her regularly, but the queen has set her priorities.
Her charisma is greatly missed, though, and there is no doubt that her listeners will be right here waiting for her to return whenever she's ready.

LKG is meant for the entertainment industry. Really, is there anything she can't do? She first started on TV, interviewing key personalities like Julius Malema and Jub Jub while he was in the middle of his trial.
She slowly transitioned to radio, where she has risen fast to the top. She currently hosts 'The Midday Link Up with LKG' on Metro FM, where she is greatly loved.
That is not to say she has not had her fair share of tiffs on radio. She has had public feuds with fellow radio personalities, including Pearl Thusi, Dineo Ranaka and Bonang Matheba. But believe it or not, the fights have only made her a hotter commodity in the celebrity world. Yes, the rules are different for ZAlebs.
