DJ Cleo Graduates From Wits University

DJ Cleo is an acclaimed producer-DJ who in the 2000s and 2010s was responsible for some of the biggest songs released, and artists of that era including Brickz. However, as the trends in music changed so did his own dominance in the music industry.

As such, the producer-DJ has been lowkey in terms of his public image recently. So much so it was reported that the musician might be going broke. As reported initially by City Press, then further circulated online by Briefly News stating:

Standard Bank took DJ Cleo to court. The bank claimed it gave the renowned producer R1 104 000 in May 2006, understanding that he would pay R9 511.01 in monthly instalments for 240 months (20 years).
Standard Bank reportedly gave DJ Cleo 20 calls to persuade him to clear his loan arrears, but the attempts failed.
“Despite the plaintiff’s attempts, the defendants failed to conclude a payment arrangement with the plaintiff.”

Given these allegations, you would believe that DJ Cleo might have been hard-won and scrambling to make ends meet. But it seems that this could not be further from the truth given his recent achievement.

DJ Cleo graduates from Wits University

Currently, in South Africa, it is regarded as graduation season as most universities across the country are hosting their various graduation ceremonies. As such, DJ Cleo was one of the many graduates who took to his social media to celebrate his milestone.

Firstly, he reshared the first tweet from 2020, when he started his journey at the University of the Witwatersrand where he confirmed having enrolled for a Bachelor of Arts. In the tweet, he asserted that he planned to finish the degree in record time which was going to be in 2023.

Today I embark on a journey that I’ve ignored for almost 20yrs. I’m nervous & excited.
It’s gonna take a lot of dedication, hard work, sweat & tears. I hope I can inspire many people out there. I’m ready.

As such, DJ Cleo was more than boastful when he fulfilled his promise as he recently walked down the graduation line to receive his degree. Moreover, he shared that more details on his tertiary educational journey would be shared via his upcoming podcast channel, Eskhaleni Podkhast, which he has yet to establish.

One person who might be happy for DJ Cleo on his graduation might be fellow producer-DJ Prince Kaybee. This is as he was one the ZAlebs that publicly applauded DJ Cleo on sharing that he intended on furthering his studies when it was first announced.

“What a legend,” wrote the DJ on Instagram sharing that he met Cleo during a shoot and he was inspired.
He wrote: “Met @djcleo1 yesterday backstage while shooting @idolssa, had a lot to talk about but what stood out for me is him going back to school, took a picture with his student card because I want to show off, what a legend.”
