Durban DJ Cocoa working on album

Durban-based DJ Cocoa Nela is set to release his first album next year, an achievement he says is greatly due to the help and advice of many established artists.

The DJ, who real name is Yonela Roloti, was introduced to house music by mentor Luyanda Maduna, and he has been hooked on the genre since 2005.

Speaking to SunBuzz about his first album, Cocoa mysteriously said: “I don’t want to reveal their names yet, but I’m looking forward to being part of some exciting projects next year.”

Of the inspiration for his music, he added: “Often I’ll be watching a movie or I’ll hear a snippet of music that will inspire me to take a song in a completely different direction.”

Cocoa says he admires local musicians Letta Mbulu, Selaelo Selota, and the late Busi Mhlongo, and would love to work with Thebe and DJ Zinhle.

The 20-year-old DJ has shared the stage with several high-profile international DJs, including Andy Compton, Atjazz, and Rocco.
