ANC Membership
Following the ANC’s lifting of its prohibition in 1991, Magashule was elected Chairperson of the Northern Free State area of the ANC. In 1994, he was named Deputy Chairperson of the newly established Free State provincial branch. He was chosen to lead the branch in 1998 and eventually became the provincial chairperson with the longest tenure in the ANC.
He has been charged with vote-rigging since, while he was in charge of the branch, the outcomes of its elective conference were twice successfully contested in court, first in 2012 and once in 2017.
In his capacity as province chairperson, he was a member of the so-called “Premier League,” an unofficial ANC lobbying group that was effective under Jacob Zuma’s presidency and included Magashule, Supra Mahumapelo of the North West, and DD Mabuza of Mpumalanga.
After serving as an ex officio member of the party’s National Executive Committee for ten years in his capacity as a province chairperson, Magashule was elected directly to the committee in 2007. He was elected Secretary General in December 2017 during the party’s 54th National Conference after a recount after his rivals challenged the outcome and demanded that 68 “missing” ballots be accounted for. He was supported by the Premier League and ran on the platform of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the unsuccessful presidential candidate.
