The model fell from the 30th floor of her luxury Manhattan combo and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In honor of a year since her tragic passing, Zozibini remembered her friend on Monday. In the year of her reign as Miss Universe 2019 and Chelsi's reign as Miss USA 2019, the former Miss Universe and the model shared a luxury Manhattan apartment.
Zozibini shared a video of her arriving at the apartment in 2019 where she was welcomed by Chelsi and the excitement was palpable. Interestingly, they both wore matching denim outfits that complemented each other.
Zozibini revealed in her post that her death anniversary would now be dedicated to reminding people to get mental health care.
“That one time I arrived and we were matching because synergy baby! I can’t believe today marks a year since we lost you. Just like you wanted, we will always take a moment to remind people to seek help and take care of their mental health always. Hope you’re resting easy queen. We love you forever and always my friend,” she wrote.
Cheslie died in January 2022, and Zozibini wrote a long Instagram post about how she had trouble coming to terms with the loss.
“Cheslie, my friend, I am devastated. I didn’t sleep a wink, caught in between not believing the news and trying to make sense of what is happening. You were supposed to send me photos of the outfit you were going to wear to a wedding this past Saturday and all the details that happened at the event. You took me by surprise, queen. I am not ready for a world you don't exist in.
“I hope you are resting easy now, love. You meant everything to so many people and you forever will. You made a mark in this world and touched so many lives.
“We celebrate your life. I love you so, so much my forever friend and forever Miss USA.” she wrote.
According to the New York Post, Cheslie left a suicide note behind and said all of her possessions should be left to her mother. Last year Cheslie's mother April Simpkins, opened up about her daughter's depression in an episode of Red Table Talk, where she discussed the events leading up to her daughter's death by suicide at age 30.
"Did you see any preliminary signs?" co-host Willow Smith asked Simpkins.
"I did," she replies. "I knew Cheslie was suffering from depression — I didn't know the severity of it."
She revealed that it was not her first attempt at suicide. "It was after that first attempt that she and I grew very close, and I wanted her to feel comfortable calling me: 'If ever you're in crisis, call me,' " she said.
