It’s Gemma, Not Emma Fassie
Singer and songwriter, Gemma Fassie, went viral for the first time just a few hours ago. A fact which was brought on by the fact that her namesake Bongani Fassie shared the songstress singing a cover to Tamia’s Missing You.

Bongani’s endorsement of the young Gemma led many to believe that she might just follow in the same footsteps as his mother, the legendary Brenda Fassie. A fact which Black Coffee seems to believe to as he made it a point to comment on her viral post.

However, for Gemma, her trending quickly turned into an unpleasant experience as she trended under a name that was not hers.

Realising that for some reason she is trending as Emma Fassie, and not Gemma Fassie, the songstress took to Twitter to lament on the fact that she is trending under the wrong name.

A fact which means that the musician is not going to get the type of amplification she deserves due to the confusion over her name. Moreover, little is known about the Cape Town born and based musician, like:

Is Gemma Fassie related to Brenda Fassie
While for most, Gemma is just getting recognition after trending. But for SABC 3 viewers, she has featured on Espresso a number of times as a musical act.
Moreover, in the past she has addressed her relation to the late African Queen of Pop, Brenda Fassie. During an interview with SportScene as she is an ambassador for the retail chain, Gemma explained the relation by sharing that:

“The answer is actually, “Yes, I am.” She is an aunt of mine. Unfortunately, I never really got the opportunity to meet her as she’d already passed away when I was only about five or six years old. I remember seeing my Dad on TV with her but it only really clicked with me in the past year since I’ve started being involved in the music industry. One of my close friends told me to change my name to ‘Gemma Fassie’ because it would gain more traction, and that it could be my ‘Sasha Fierce’ moment by stepping into this new persona and making it my own.”

While her viral video is of her singing a cover, Gemma has been releasing music as an independent artist. Her first official single as a musician was back in 2020 with the single After Hours. Since then she has released a number of singles with the latest one being No Drama which was released officially in September 2022.

As such, Gemma trending asserts her intention she stated during the aforementioned interview back in 2021 when she said that:

“One of my main goals this year is to explore ‘Gemma Fassie’ and stepping into who I am as an artist. It’s important for me to find my place within the industry. Another goal is to release a new tape with Retro Records. And lastly, I would love to perform on a massive stage in the near future.”
