Afrikaans singer Kurt Darren was not the "Kaptain" of this ship last night singing the national anthem at the Varsity Cup rugby match between the universities of Stellenbosch and Pretoria.

He started confidently with "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika, (God Bless Africa), Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo, (Raise high Her glory), Yizwa imithandazo yethu, (Hear our Prayers), Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo (God bless us, we her children).

But the star hit the rocks in the second verse, mixing up the lyrics.

Once the video went viral with the performance, social media couldn't help but ridicule the treffers muso.

Some of the solemn rugby players stifled giggles, and within minutes, Darren has also been compared to Ras Dumisani, who famously also put his own twist on to the anthem.

The tweeps had to let their voices be heard on the situation and here is some of the best roasts:

In a telephonic interview with Eusebiaus from Radio702, Kurt Darren confessed to having messed up the lyrics but mentioned that he thinks it's silly to make a drama out of it.

When asked by the radio host why he didn't learn the lyrics as a paid "professional", Darren couldn't stand the heat and dropped the phone.

Kurt Darren might be setting his sails for the horizon until he lives down his stumble over the national anthem.
