It seems like it was just yesterday when we heard L’vovo’s hit single Bayang’sukela blaring through our speakers. Ten years later and L’vovo is still going strong, releasing more music and scooping awards here and there.
The KZN musician, who is partially responsible for some of our December tunes, spoke to ZAlebs about his consistency in the industry thus far and the challenges he experienced when creating his first album.
“I’ll be honest my first album really scared me, the way people received it was so overwhelming to me I didn’t expect my first project
to do so well and just other successful things I did on the side when my album came out those many years ago.
"I won’t lie to you and say it was challenging for me to get a deal, it wasn’t. I recorded my album with Zakes Bantwini and the next thing I got a deal with EMI. I think my success in breaking through the industry in such a successful manner was due to people wanting
something new at that time and I just happen to come at the right time.”
L’vovo also gave credit to people like Oskido who played a pivotal role in his career.
“You know Oskido used to tell me that you’re as good as your last record, he always told me to respect people and respect the people that buy my music and respect those who came before me in this industry.
"Oskido has taught me to also work towards building a legacy, to be consistent and master the art of longevity in this industry because after your first hit single, then what? Are you able to produce a second, third and fourth hit?”
In celebrating his 10 years in the music industry L’vovo will be holding a concert at the Botanical Gardens and also informed us that he is working on a Live celebration DVD that will also showcase a look into his private life.
“In the DVD people will also get to know the life of L’vovo and where I come from. People will also get to know who Thokozani is, that’s my real name. I’m also someone’s son, I didn’t just rock up here as L’vovo, there’s a lot behind just me being a star that I would like for my fans to see.”
