We've been speaking to Liezel van der Westhuizen this week, mostly about her experiences at the Durban July as well as some crucial style tips for winter.
Liezel is always friendly and full of life, and the one thing we love about her the most is that she's not shy to express herself. She's always happy to be flamboyant and expressive particularly with her fashion. We couldn't resist but pawn off some advice from a fashion queen such as her.
On the Durban July she said:
"I had many favourite outfits but one that specifically caught my eye was Bonang’s dress, designed by Gert Johan Coetzee. I definitely fell in love with that dress it was amazing and I’d most certainly wear it if given the opportunity."
She was dressed to kill herself; in her Joyville outfit designed by Craig Jacobs. She showed the whole country that you don't have to spend millions to look amazing, instead she wore the recycle piece which was made out of recycled cadbury wrappers! The outfit was rounded off with silver flats which made her look extremely comfortable. It's an outfit that caught the eye; and captured the hearts once we all found out how it was made.
Liezel's Winter Style Tips
We've seen and heard plenty about the Durban July (I’m sure our ZAlebs readers have had enough of hearing about it!) Instead we turned our attention to the brisk winter that has embraced us all. It can be such a drag to remain stylish in winter, especially considering that you have to choose the perfect coat to complement your outfit! On the topic, Liezel says, "I believe that you can never go wrong when investing in a stylish and classic trench coat but you must find the perfect coat for your body shape and a solid colour coat that can be used every season. A NO NO would be a multi coloured coat that can only be worn a few times so please try to stay away from those."
So once you have chosen the perfect coat for the winter months, you need to equip yourself with a decent closet of good pants and bottoms. Some people still insist on wearing skirts or shorts; while this can be frowned upon by the masses, Liezel talks us through how she thinks we could make it work. "In terms of pants strangely enough I see a lot of ladies (and some men…well mostly rappers) wearing leather pants in winter, personally I would never wear them but if worn correctly with the correct top, accessories and trench coat it can be pulled off perfectly.
"Ladies if you’re still fond of wearing your pencil skirts in winter be cautious about wearing white pencil skirts try to mix things up and wear a white pencil skirt with a black top and classic black pumps and if you want to jazz it up for an evening event wear a nice pair of black Luella hills and a light material type of trench coat."
"When Choosing Hair Style, Keep in Mind Your Facial Features" - Liezel
The last style item that you need to attend to in the winter is hair. A good hairdo can top off an excellent, stylish ensemble; whereas a bad one can absolutely ruin you!
"In terms of hair in the winter this is mostly for my ladies who have short hair (like me) or for those who are deciding to take the short hair rout, my advice is to always take your physical features into consideration, remember that you can always cut more off, but it won’t grow back quickly and an occasional highlighting treatment will do, its winter so you would prefer to go the dark colour route but that’s also up to you."
ZAlebs also asked Liezel about the Mr Price Pro event she attended between the 1-7of July and this is what she had to say:
"The Mr Price Pro was incredible. The turnout was the biggest in many years. There were lots of beach activities for young & old, as well as a great festival retail area with many little stores including a Big Mr Price Fashion Store. And there were 3 nights of free concerts featuring the best of South African Bands. Also The Red Cap Foundation did amazing work with soccer activities on the beach and involving youngsters from the local community.
I got a chance to hang out with many of the world’s best surfers. This was great for me as I started surfing last year so I got a lot of advice. Next year the Mr Price Pro will be held in Ballito again, and worth the weekend away for the entire family so if you’re free next year please do bring your family with."
We just want to take a moment to thank Liezel Van Der Westhuizen for speaking to us and giving us these valuable style tips that we are sure will come in helpful to many people around South Africa in the coming months!
