In preparation for SAMA28, the awards have announced the new hosts who will be joining the team for hosting duties.
Comedian extraordinaire Mpho Popps and entertainer Robot Boii have been announced as hosts of Night 1 of the 28th iteration of the South African Music Awards to be held on Saturday 27 August 2022. The non-broadcast awards will be streamed live on the SAMAs TikTok page @thesamas_ and the SAMA YouTube channel.
Popps, who boasts stellar hosting skills is no stranger to the SAMA stage. The talented entertainer hosted #SAMA24 and #SAMA25 in 2018 and 2019 earning much fan adoration.
Robot Boii, who recently took South Africa by storm with his viral dance challenge set to his single Salary Salary which features contributions from Mellow & Sleazy.
The hosting team will be completed by TikTok sensation Alphi Sipho Mkhwanazi who will hold down the red carpet and behind the scenes proceedings for the night’s TikTok stream. Mkhwanazi, a comedian and emcee, garnered a significant social media following after sharing his compelling lived experiences.
TikTok recently announced finalists for the inaugural TikTok Viral Song of the Year category which seeks to acknowledge local songs and artists dominating South African entertainment platforms. Fans can vote for one of the songs exclusively on TikTok until tonight at midnight. The winners will be announced at the live event.
Mpho Popps and Robot Boii will steer the first night’s awards while Lawrence Maleka and Nandi Madida will share the Night 2 stage, on Sunday 28 August 2022 televised live on SABC 1 at 20:00.
Lawrence who had the privilege of hosting the awards last year said he was excited when he received the call to host again, “I am again honoured to have received the call to host the country’s most prestigious awards show. I am excited about the calibre of artists that will be celebrated across 30 categories, the phenomenal performers that will ignite the stage and the magic Nandi Madida and I will create on stage. It’s going to be a memorable iteration of the South African Music Awards.”
Nandi Madida said: “When I accepted my first SAMA in 2020 for my collaboration with K.O, Say U Will, I would not have imagined that I would be hosting just two years later. I am humbled to have been trusted with this honour and look forward to bringing unforgettable moments to the #SAMA28 stage alongside my co-hosts.”
