Which international band or artist should open for you?

Open for me? Not the other way around? Hmm. Grizzly Bear or Wild Beasts. They’re two of my favourite bands of the last five years.

How important is it to floss?

Very important. My dentist once told me that if I don’t floss I would die. I carry that warning with me every day. Imagine that ‘Death-by-not-flossing’. Sad... Unless you’re talking about flossing, as in bragging. Then it’s not important at all. I don’t like braggarts.

The thing about SA fans you love the most?

They’re from home. I get to meet them.

Your favourite song of yours?

This changes a lot, but at this very moment it’s probably track 11 on my album, My Jonathan.

Weirdest memory of school ever?

Kissing girls behind the library, being ratted out, and then having to tell your father that he has to go to a meeting at school about the incident. It was primary school. I didn’t see what the big deal was.

Any advice for Miley Cyrus?

Which song do you wish you had written?

Flyin’ High (In the Friendly Sky) by Marvin Gaye. Put aside the mesmerising vocals and that hard to pin down rhythm, just listen to the chord progression. Floors me every time.

Any rituals before going on stage?

I warm up my vocals, do some breathing exercises, walk around, walk away from the actual venue. I really don’t like seeing the crowd before I go on. Get a glass of wine and a bottle of room temperature water, pray. Then I’m ready to go.

If you were a superhero, what would your name and superpower be?

I can’t answer this question without dipping into lame territory. I don’t really watch action movies, let alone superhero movies, so I’m drowning now. I have no idea. Can I just be a normal human being? That’s really awesome actually.

Any guilty pleasures?

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. I believe that if you’re going to do something, then do it. Don’t waste your time feeling guilty about it. Enjoy it.

Who should play you in the story of your life?

Terrence Howard.

Most famous person on your phone list?

Karl Anderson, the MD of Just Music. He’s also the most important.

If a train leaves the station at 2pm, carrying 17 people, and stops once to pick up 4 more people, why?

Oh no. I’m terrible at these things. Uhm...I don’t know...carrying 17? Including the driver? Let’s exclude the driver and come to a total of 16, then by stopping to pick up 4, we can have a nicely rounded number like 20. I’m completely wrong, aren’t I?

If you could do a duet or colab with any artist, who would it be?

James Blake. He’s an English musician. His album Overgrown is one of my favourite albums of 2013.

If you have 10 words to sell your latest album, how would you do it?

Do not forget to buy my album because it’s good.
