The song Amalobolo (Slow Jam saseMlazi) finally gets visuals and an actual ear.
At first glance I thought this song was going to be the famed Slow Jam taxi's eMlazi. Shhhhhh, don't judge me. Being an Umlazi native I always look for affiliation to my hometown. Anyway, asikho lapho. We're here. On this song about how a man found the love of his life kodwa imali ibingavumi.
If you've listened to the song, it's a very mini-tale about his relationship with Mholi's mother. Oh, Mholi is his son by the way.
The song breaks down how they met, what happened between them and their relationships eventual, end brought on by her. The story is pretty straight forward but what I wanted to see was whether or not that story was translated into film. Quick answer: it sorta did.
The video's concentration is on OkMalumKoolKat's character's Smanga and Noluthando's budding relationship. A secondary storyline is Smanga's grind and him trying to bring the Gqomwave to the people. So, it follows their initial meeting and growth in connection which suddenly comes to an end at a party where Noluthando's Dad puts him against the wall and says in order for him to be with her he needs to pay ilobolo.
Now does the video not being a direct translation of the song a problem? Not really. It would've been nice though if the story was stuck to and it would have been a nice little nugget to have Mholi in on the video as well.
The biggest highlight is the cinematography which will make you want to go eMlazi and to the beach. A solid video nonetheless repping uMzilay'. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
