With a decade spanning over two decades, Oskido has really opened the world of djing not only in Mzansi, but in the entire continent. He is one of South Africa's premier house/kwaito club and radio DJs and producers and his music keeps people on the dance floor.

Oskido is very much respected in the South African music scene as he is the one that gave birth to Kwaito music genre which became highly regarded worldwide. 

Let's delve into the life of Mzansi's favourite DJ. 


Oskido Name & Age


His real name Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa. He was born on the 23rd of November 1967. He is 52 years old turning 53 in 2020. Some refer to him as the 'Big O' or 'Godzilla'.

Oskido Family


Oskido is the son of a Zimbabwean politician and a South African woman known as Emily, who was born in the Oukasie township near Brits. His father is Esaph Mdlongwa, who was a former member of the Welshman Ncube-led MDC.

He spent his childhood in a town called Luveve, which is in Zimbabwe's second largest city, Bulawayo where his father was from. He went Gifford High School in Bulawayo for his early education. He then returned to South Africa in 1987. He worked at the family tuckshop and later pursued music full time. 

Oskido Wife



In 2015, the Kwaito artiste separated from his wife, Kibi, who he spent many years with. He announced he has found love again and has married again to Mathapelo.

He and Kibi as a couple have two children and now a son with his newfound love, Mathapelo.

Oskido has three kids, Mandy, Naledi, from his previous marriage and a son named Bass from his current wife.

Oskido Career


The early 90's found him selling boerewors sausage rolls outside the Razzmatazz nightclub in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, sneaking his way inside the club to spin the closing sessions and slowing down American house tracks to a tempo that "Africans could dance to".

He teamed up with producers Don Laka and Christos Katsaitis, and together they founded Kalawa Records and released their  self-entitled BOP (Brothers Of Peace) compilation in 1993. The label later turned into Kalawa Jazmee in 1995.

Oskido has since gone on to produce numerous artists such as Bongo Maffin, Boom Shaka and Mafikizolo. He's also worked with DJ Zinhle and Oskido has a very high regards for DJ Zinhle's talent. Recently DJ Zinhle gave DJ Oskido a shout out for being such a good mentor to her.

Between 200 and 2010 he released so many albums that together were turned into a compilation called Church Grooves. In the summer of 2019, he released a new album called Akhiwe which soon became a hit. He collaborated with a number of artists on the album such as Winnie Khumalo, Monique and Tamara Dey.

Fans know that when he goes into studio he will not disappoint.

Oskido does not focus on music only as he's quite the businessman. Earlier in 2019, Mdlongwa shared a snap of his new restaurant, Daruma Japanese Restaurant by Oskido, on social media and that it would be opening soon.

Later, the restuarant was seen up and running as DJ Fresh's wife's birthday was being celebrated there. Among the celebrity guests that were gathered at the table were DJ Fresh, DJ Black Coffee, Julius Malema, DJ Shimza, and Thando Thabete.


Oskido Controversy


In 2019 Oskido declined an international music award Kwaito producer Oskido, real name Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa, declined an award nomination by the Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards (RoilBAA), the organisers confirmed.

Oskido's spokesperson was qouted saying “Please note that Oskido was born in Brits, South Africa, and was raised in Bulawayo therefore he doesn’t qualify for the nomination.”


However, according to Zim YouthVillage Oskido won in these awards in 2017 for Outstanding Ambassador and Zimtainment shows him as one of the winners.

Oskido Net Worth


According to Briefly, Oskido is ranked the eighth richest South African musicians in 2019. He has an estimated net worth of R27.3 million.

There's no doubt that DJ Oskido still rules the game in the world of Kwaito. He's worked hard to get to where he is today and his music still keeps people on the dance floor till the AMs. Can't wait to see what he may have in store for his fans in 2020.
