In most cases, showbiz families are all about business. But here in Mzansi, our showbiz families ooze talent.

Whether it’s their natural talent, their beauty or brains, or a combination of it all, they’ve  entertained South African audiences for decades. And there’s no stopping them, or what they have to offer us.

Take a look at some of our favourite celebrity families.

The Bala Brothers

These brothers are a talented bunch of singers from Uitenhage, just outside of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

Following in the musical footsteps of their parents who performed in their church choir, Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo are all superstars in their own right.

The older brother Zwai made headlines as the first Black member of the prestigious Drakensberg Boy’s Choir School during the Apartheid years.

He later joined the music group TKZee.

Loyiso is a solo act, and he also acted in the popular soapie Backstage, winning over audiences with his angelic voice.

Their younger brother Phelo hit the music scene many years later and released a self-titled album – oozing talent.

Together the Bala Brothers also released their own album B3, started their own recording company Bala Brothers Production and released an album Live At Emperor’s Palace.

They also made their American debut with the album Bala Brothers, which reached the top 10 on the Billboard World Music charts.

The Ranaka’s

Dineo Ranaka is a popular radio DJ, with her voice heard daily in millions of homes across the country.

When she decided to diversify her portfolio and also be a TV reality star, South Africans had no idea what they were in for.

In Dineo’s Diary, it was clear the real stars of the show were her family – loving, supportive, brutally honest and oh so funny.

Soon the spin-off became a reality and The Ranaka’s were Mzansi’s newest celebrity family.

The sister act between Dineo and her sister, Generations: The Legacy actress Manaka, was marvellous to see.

The Kani’s

Dr. John Kani is a South African legend.

The prolific stage and silver screen actor’s career spans over more than 30 years.

He is an award-winning actor and the main theatre at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre is named after him.

Some of his film credits include Sarafina, The Lion King and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.

And the apple certainly didn’t fall far from the tree for this family.

Dr. Kani’s son Atandwa is also an actor – in fact, he played the younger version of his father’s character King T’Chaka in the billion dollar grossing film Black Panther.

This celebrity father-son duo love working together, and Atandwa couldn’t have asked for a better teach.

Dr. Kani directed his son in the stage adaptation Sizwe Banzi Is Dead for American audiences – a role he himself portrayed during the 1980s.

Somizi Is His Mother’s Son

Somizi Mhlongo is a superstar – a dance choreographer, actor and TV personality, he is a force in the entertainment industry.

What many people don’t know is that his mother is Mary Twala – an award-winning actress, recognised for her roles in Molo Fish, Taxi To Soweto and Sarafina.

In fact, the mother-son duo worked on Sarafina together.

And just like Somizi followed his mother into the entertainment industry, his daughter is following in his acting footsteps.

Bahumi Madisakwane is a young upcoming actress, who gets all of the support from her dad, and her mother who is also an actress – Palesa, well known for her role in the soapie Generations.

And Somizi showed everyone just how overprotective he can be, when he told everyone how his daughter deserved her role in the biopic series Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story.

The Locnville Twins

It’s difficult to tell identical twins Andrew and Brian apart, but we don’t need to if they keep on mesmerizing us with their musical talent.

Although born in the US, they are South African through and through.

They’ve been in the spotlight since their hit song Sun In My Pocket was released in 2010, and they became household names.

But they’ve dealt with fame like it’s second nature – perhaps that’s what happens when your parents are famous too. Their dad Spencer is a guitarist while their mom Pam Eichner is an actress.

Fame and the spotlight was destined for Locnville.

The Nkosi’s

Stars in their own right, Nkhensani and Zam Nkosi have been a fabulous celebrity family for more than 20 years.

The actress and TV presenter have always been supportive and loving and kind – and Nkhensani changed the local fashion industry when she launched her own clothing line Stoned Cherrie.

Pretty much living out of the spotlight with their four children these days, this celebrity family still brace South African audiences each year around Valentine’s Day – reminding us again of their talent and beauty.

The Maponyane’s

South African footballer and a Kaiser Chiefs legend, Marks Maponyane’s sons went in the opposite career direction than their famous father.

Katlego is a snowboarder, and Masego, popularly known as Maps, is everything else.

An actor and TV personality, brand ambassador and model, Maps’s highest honour is probably when he was announced as Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year.

Always booked, busy and flying to some fancy international destination, the Maponyane’s prove that not all celebrity families are talented in the same way.

Mzansi has definitely been blessed with beautiful and talented celebrity families. And as kids get into the entertainment industry younger, the next few years will be exciting as we get to see these families grow their brand and dynasty.
