Showbiz families, for the most part, are all about business. Our entertainment family, on the other hand, ooze talent in Mzansi.
They’ve been entertaining South African audiences for decades, whether it’s because of their inherent talent, beauty, or brains, or a combination of all three. And there’s nothing we can do to stop them or what they have to give.
Take a look at the families of some of our favorite celebrities.
The Bala Brothers
These brothers are a brilliant group of vocalists from Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape, just outside of Port Elizabeth.
Zwai, Loyiso, and Phelo are all superstars in their own way, following in their parents’ musical footsteps as members of their church choir.
During the Apartheid era, the older brother Zwai made history as the first Black member of the famous Drakensberg Boy’s Choir School.
Later, he became a member of the music group TKZee.
Loyiso is a solo artist who has also been in the popular serial opera Backstage, where his heavenly voice wowed the crowd.
Phelo, their younger brother, debuted in the music world many years later with a self-titled record that oozed skill.
The Bala Brothers also recorded their album, B3, and founded their own recording company, Bala Brothers Production, as well as an album called Live At Emperor’s Palace.
Their album Bala Brothers, which charted in the top ten on the Billboard World Music charts, was also their first in the United States.
The Ranaka’s
Dineo Ranaka is a well-known radio DJ whose voice can be heard in millions of households across the country regularly.
South Africans had no idea what they were getting themselves into when she decided to broaden her business and become a TV reality star.
Dineo’s Diary made it evident that her family was the true stars of the show – loving, supporting, brutally honest, and oh so funny.
The Ranakas became Mzansi’s newest celebrity family as the spin-off became a reality.
Dineo and her sister, Generations: The Legacy actress Manaka, put on a fantastic sibling act.
The Kani’s
Dr. John Kani is a legend in South Africa.
The renowned theater and movie actor has a long and illustrious career spanning more than 30 years.
He is a multi-award-winning actor, and the Market Theatre’s main theatre is named for him.
Sarafina, The Lion King, and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War are among his film credits.
And for one family, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Atandwa, Dr. Kani’s son, is also an actor, having played the younger version of his father’s character King T’Chaka in the multibillion-dollar film Black Panther.
This famous father-son team enjoys collaborating, and Atandwa couldn’t have asked for a better teacher.
Dr. Kani directed his son in the American stage rendition of Sizwe Banzi Is Dead, a part he played in the 1980s.
Somizi Is His Mother’s Son
Somizi Mhlongo is a superstar in the entertainment world, as a dance choreographer, actress, and TV personality.
Many people are unaware that his mother is Mary Twala, an award-winning actress who has appeared in films such as Molo Fish, Taxi To Soweto, and Sarafina.
In reality, the mother-son team collaborated on Sarafina.
And, just as Somizi followed in his mother’s footsteps into the entertainment industry, his daughter is doing the same.
Bahumi Madisakwane is a young emerging actress who receives unwavering support from her father and mother, Palesa, who is well known for her role in the soapie Generations.
And when Somizi informed everyone how much his daughter deserved her role in the biographical series Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story, he demonstrated how overprotective he can be.
The Locnville Twins
Andrew and Brian are identical twins, and it’s impossible to tell them apart, but we don’t have to if they keep enchanting us with their musical talent.
They are South Africans through and through, despite being born in the United States.
Since the release of their smash single Sun In My Pocket in 2010, they’ve been in the spotlight and have become household stars.
However, they’ve handled fame as if it were second nature to them — perhaps this is what occurs when your parents are famous as well. Spencer Eichner is a guitarist, whereas Pam Eichner is an actress.
Locnville was bound for fame and the limelight.
The Nkosi’s
Nkhensani and Zam Nkosi have been a beautiful celebrity family for more than 20 years and star in their own right.
Nkhensani, an actress and TV host, has always been helpful, caring, and kind – and when she created her clothing line, Stoned Cherrie, she revolutionized the local fashion sector.
Although they are mostly out of the spotlight these days with their four children, this celebrity family nonetheless surprises South African audiences every year around Valentine’s Day, reminding us of their ability and beauty.
The Maponyane’s
Marks Maponyane’s sons followed in the footsteps of their legendary father, South African soccer and Kaiser Chiefs icon Marks Maponyane.
Katlego is a snowboarder, whereas Masego, often known as Maps, is responsible for everything else.
Maps’ finest honor as an actor, TV personality, brand ambassador, and model came when he was named Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year.
The Maponyane family proves that not all superstar families are equally talented. They are always booked, busy, and flying to some exotic international place.
Mzansi has been graced with a plethora of attractive and talented celebrity families. And, as more children enter the entertainment industry at a younger age, the next few years will be thrilling as we watch these families’ brands and dynasties expand.
