The road to the Grammys has officially begun. The 2019 Grammy nominees were unveiled on Friday and South Africans have a big reason to celebrate after spotting a few of our own among the nominees.

The Soweto Gospel Choir, fresh off the back of an incredible showing at the Global Citizen Festival where they collaborated with artists including Wizkid, are nominated once again for next year’s ceremony; this time, in the Best World Music category. They face competition from artists from Cote D’Ivoire and Niger for the big prize.

The traditional Gospel Choir has won two awards at the Grammys, and has been nominated for another two awards in their career so far (making this one their 5th ever nomination).

Meanwhile, in the Album of the Year category, a number of South African artists are sharing in the celebrations after this year’s Black Panther: The Album, was nominated alongside offerings from the likes of Post Malone, H.E.R and Cardi B.

Although it was a compilation album, Sjava, Babes Wodumo, Saudi and Yugen Blak Rock all contributed to one or more of the songs on the record, and as such, share the spoils of the nomination. Saudi and Sjava were among those who thanked TDE for the opportunity.
Imagine if, in February, five  artists from Mzansi can say they contributed to Grammy Award-winning material? What a time it is to be South African!
