A man’s shoes says a lot about him, where he is in life and where he wants to go. They also are an often overlooked part of building a wardrobe full of classic items. Your collection doesn’t have to be a whole walk in closet but having a few key styles will ensure you are ready and looking good for any occasion. Here are a few shoes that every guy should have in their closet....

Athletic Shoes

There’s nothing better than a sleek pair of athletic shoes. Thanks to the whole Athleisure trend - mixing athletic wear with casual outfits - it is now completely acceptable to walk around in running shoes.

I recommend sticking with an overall neutral colour like grey, black and navy. This will give you some comfortable shoes that go with almost every day-to-day outfit. Other crazy colors like neon green or a bright red are cool but have less versatility in your wardrobe. But in no way does it have to be boring, just look at these ones on DJ Tira.

White Sneaker

The second pair of shoes you should own, is what is considered an absolute essential to any well-dressed man’s wardrobe. A good pair of classic white sneakers are clean, classic and look great with everything from super casual to semi formal looks.

Try and keep them as clean and classic as possible - emphasis on the clean. Make sure you stock up on those sneaker cleaning kits to keep them star white. Try pairing them with a bright sock for that added flair, like how Tshego Koke styled his.

You gotta love a good loafer hey. It’s hard to think of another pair of shoes, for men, with their versatility. One pair can take you from the office to the club to running errands around town to a wedding to a yacht party. Or on set like the ones Maps Maponyane wore on Top Billing.

They're also a great trick for guys who have a hard time in more formal shoes like brogues, these have more breathing room and comfort throughout the day.

Chelsea Boot

I know these get a lot of shade on the timelines but they remain a wardrobe staple. With its 1960's style clean lines, slim profile and relaxed fit, I don’t believe that they will go out of style any time soon. They can be dressed up and down quite easily. The trick, though is get the ones in dark colours like black and navy. Why? The brown ones are most common but they don't match as nicely with darker wash jeans.

If you were in the market for two pairs, I’d recommend a one classic leather style like these on Zulu Mkhathini, and a suede number for something a little bit different.
