Currently in South Africa, the month of March marks the time that radio personalities await to find out their fate. This is as the month marks the change in terms of radio slots and personalities that have not made an impact in the past year. Specifically, radio personalities are given the prime spot of either breakfast or the drive-time slot.
While some stations are waiting until the end of the month to announce their changes in this regard. Other stations have already started to confirm which radio jocks will be exiting the lauded prime-time radio spots. This included Metro FM. A fact which has resulted in listeners of the radio station reminiscing on the “golden days” of the radio station.
Unathi and Glen Lewis on Metro FM remembered
Entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela took to his social media to confirm that Metro FM breakfast team helmed by veteran broadcaster MoFlava, and Khutso Tsaledi as the co-host has been axed. The axing of the two comes as their breakfast show has not brought in numbers as it is competing with the likes of Anele and The Breakfast Club and the newly introduced but popular 959 Breakfast with Dineo and Sol.
Therefore, as the announcement was made, not many radio listeners were surprised that MoFlava and Khutso were axed. Allegedly, their axing is meant to make way for the new incoming DJ Sabby and Skhumba duo, who will replace the two.
RADIO:
Moflava & Khutso Theledi out
The hosts of Metro FM’s breakfast show ‘Wake Up Pn Metro FM With MoFlava & Khutso Theledi’ will be replaced.
While there were mixed feelings about DJ Sabby and Skhumba as replacements, specifically as it is believed that they will not make any difference in terms of the dwindling numbers in terms of listenerships.
Fans of the station then went down memory lane to the heydays when Metro FM was not only a strong breakfast show contender but was considered the best breakfast radio show. This was back in the days of Unathi Nkayi and Glen Lewis, who hosted The First Avenue with Melanie Bala reading the news and Owen Hannie as the sports reporter.
The combination of Glen and Unathi won the station back-to-back awards for the Coolest Breakfast Show on the radio during its glory days. But Metro FM management meddled with a winning combination when they had attempted and succeeded in separating the two.
But when the station fired DJ Fresh, it was all a downward spiral thereafter as the station failed to create the same magic that the aforementioned personalities had during their Metro FM breakfast shows. A fact which means that DJ Sabby and Skhumba will have a mammoth task when they take over the contentious timeslot at the beginning of April 2023 if news reports are true.
