He first shot to the limelight in the early 2000s after being cast in several films including the award-winning 2003 film- God is African. He also appeared in James’ Journey to Jerusalem in the same year.
The following year, Masebenza was cast in the film Forgiveness. He went on to play other roles in other films including Cape of Good Hope, Poena is Koening, Zulu Love Letter, and Finding Lenny.
A versatile and talented actor, Hugh Masebenza has also made several characters come to life when he landed roles in some of the biggest television series in the country including Generations, Scandal, Society, Zero Tolerance, Room 9 and Ashes to Ashes. He also had a role on SABC1’s miniseries- Society.
Besides appearing in productions, Hugh Masebenza also acted in commercials. He was cast in one of the most memorable Savanna Cider advertisements that ultimately earned him the name the Savanna advert guy.
What happened to Hugh Masebenza?
After disappearing from our screens for a couple of years, in February 2022, pictures of Hugh Masebenza surfaced.
In the picture that was reportedly taken in the streets of Pretoria Central Business District, the actor looked quite disheveled and thinner than the last time he was seen in public. It didn’t take long for rumours to emerge about him.
After the picture went viral some speculated that Hugh Masebenza was broke and homeless and living on the streets while a few thought that the actor was sick and needed help.
While tweeps used the platform to appeal to Savanna Cider and the actor’s family to get help him get back on his feet, one tweep who claimed to be his uncle dismissed the claim that the actor was living on the streets and instead claimed that the photo was taken on set of a film he was working on.
While it’s unclear what is really happening in Hugh Masebenza’s life since the world already forgot about the March 2022 photo, this is apparently not the first time that the actor’s plight has been recorded in the papers.
On 6th September 2015, Daily Sun published a report about the actor living on the streets of Johannesburg. According to sources, the actor was often seen in dirty clothes and he kept talking to himself. They appealed to his family to help their kin out.
