However, despite his early fame and continued acclaim on television, Ngubeni does have a tendency to shy away from the spotlight when he is not working on any television projects. As such, it has been a couple of years since he made headlines since the end of his Moja Love show, Love Back

But now it seems that Wright is ready to grace our television screens as he has been confirmed as the host of the first collaborative show between Showmax and Moja Love.

Wright Ngubeni set to return to our television screens

In an official statement by DStv, it announced the first collaborative show between Showmax and Moja Love titled kuRuff. The collaboration was a long time in the making following the two platforms establishing their working relationship when Showmax was able to have Moja Love’s popular flagship shows on its platform back in 2021. Including Uyajola 9/9 and X-Repo back in 2021.

As such, kuRuff was the natural extension of their continued efforts to bring the best of both worlds together. The term “ku’ruff” is a colloquial term which is meant to express that, “times/ the current status quo is difficult.” As such, the term is an indication of the premise of the collaborative reality format as the statement explains:

“Showmax and Moja Love have just dropped the trailer for their first collaboration, kuRuff, a 13-part reality show that tackles the “burden” of being a sole breadwinner… kuRuff will be hosted by Wright Ngubeni. In each episode, Ngubeni will hear from both the sole breadwinner and their dependents, before staging an intervention to try to improve the situation.”

Wright has never had the experience of being a breadwinner considering that his older sister Sarah Ngubeni was also in the entertainment industry by the time her brother was also famous. Ngubeni did share how he can relate to the guests featured on the show by stating that:

“Even though I have never experienced black tax from my immediate family, there have been instances with extended family that could be considered black tax, even if I did not know what it was at the time,” says Ngubeni. “In our family, we have always tried to elevate everyone and make sure that everyone is good, so at certain times in our lives, there have been moments when the 'burden' fell on just one person. I am only realising this now as an adult.”

kuRuff is set to premiere on Showmax on Monday, 17 April 2023 with its first episode. Thereafter, an episode will be uploaded on Tuesdays on the platform. It is unclear when the show will have its Moja Love premiere at the moment.
