As South Africans and the world celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, many have shared their fond memories of the revolutionary icon, whose good humour and kindness is reflected in most of these tales.
One such memory comes from popular singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka who, speaking to CapeTalk presenter Redi Thlabi, relayed an amusing memory she has of a phone call from Madiba shortly after his release from prison.
“When he called, my son answered, and I think Madiba said ‘Can I speak to your mum?’ My son answered ‘My mommy’s not here’ and put down the phone’,” recalled Chaka Chaka.
“Later when he called back, my son said ‘You keep calling mom, are you mommy’s boyfriend? Why are you not calling daddy?’. ”
The singer revealed how she profusely apologised for her son’s bluntness when she finally spoke to Mandela on the phone, but remembers that Madiba was far from offended by the boy’s frankness but instead just laughed it off.
