RSG radio pastor Riekert Botha, who hosts the “Pleisters vir die Siel” (Bandages for the Soul) show on Afrikaans station Radio Sonder Grense (RSG), caused a ruckus online over his opinion on homosexuality.
The pastor wrote on his show’s Facebook page that homosexuality was “out” with God, even though it seemed to be “in” with the rest of the world. A parent of a gay child noticed the entry, and brought it to the attention of journalist Jean Oosthuizen, who works for the Kerkbode newsletter.
Oosthuizen wrote about the entry in the newsletter and on Facebook, and the exposure resulted in a fierce debate about Botha’s statement, with some even calling for Botha’s contributions to the show to be cut.
Complaints about the issue via email were sent to RSG station manager Magdaleen Kruger, but she told the newspaper that the complaints received were not more than those usually received. RSG seems to be implying that people’s views on Facebook were representations of their own opinions.
RSG has not taken any action regarding Botha’s contributions to the show, but has requested that he remove references to “Pleisters vir die Siel” and RSG from his personal Facebook page.
According to Beeld, Botha is adamant that he believes in the Bible wholeheartedly, and has no problem with people thinking he is a fundamentalist. However, on Wednesday he apologised to anyone he had offended with his comments.
What do you think RSG should do?
