According to Netwerk24, Sarel died during the early hours of Monday morning, from a suspected heart attack, with his family still awaiting the results of a post mortem.
Known as ‘Sarel van Sabie’ to viewers of the first season of MasterChef SA, Sarel was a chef and also the owner of an adventure camp in Sabie.
Netwerk24 reports that Sarel’s manager, Hetta Saunderson, has said that he was staying with friends while he attended an expo in Pretoria over the weekend, and was expected to fly back home on Monday. He was still sharing recipes on Facebook on Sunday.
Sarel, who was in his forties, finished fourth in the MasterChef competition in 2012, where he became known for the trademark bananas he wore around his neck.
He leaves behind his wife Lize, three children, and also two foster children.
