Convicted criminal Molema 'Jub Jub' Maarohanye on Wednesday heard that his murder conviction was overturned and replaced with a culpable homicide conviction.

Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala, his co-accused, in June launched appeals against their convictions and sentencing for murder.

The pair were in October 2012 found guilty of murder and attempted murder, as well as driving under the influence of drugs and racing on a public road.

They had crashed into a group of schoolchildren walking in a Soweto street in 2010. Four boys were killed, while two others were left with permanent brain damage.

Both were sentenced to more than 20 years in jail.

The South Gauteng High Court ruled that the two are not guilty of murder and attempted murder, and will instead be sentenced on the conviction of culpable homicide.

Jub Jub and Tshabalala have now been handed a sentence of eight effective years in jail, starting from when they first went to jail.

Many social network users are pleased with the verdict, saying it is only fair after Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was also only sentenced for culpable homicide after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
