Steenkamp family rejects Oscar's money

It's nearly impossible to go through a single day without a new Oscar Pistorius story emerging (In fact we have one from earlier right here!) During her time on the stand, the controversial Anette Vergeer revealed that Oscar Pistorius had been paying R6000 to the Steenkamp family every month. He has been paying this money every month since March 2013, a month after he shot and killed their daughter, Reeva Steenkamp.

Last month, Pistorius was found guilty of the culpable homicide of Reeva and this week is in court for his sentencing. Anette Vergeer has been trending on social media following her ferverous defence of the Paralympian, as she attempts to make the case that jail would not serve him any good.

While being cross examined by state defence lawyer, Gerrie Nel, Vergeer revealed that Oscar had been paying the Steenkamp family R6000 a month. Nel crushed her argument and Oscar's spirit in a swift move when he revealed that the Steenkamp family had not touched a cent of this money and had no intention of doing so.

In fact, Nel revealed that the money would be returned to Oscar and confirmed that the family turned down R375,000 from the athlete. This money came after he sold his car but June Steenkamp dubbed it "Blood money" and refused to touch it.

While I've struggled to find sympathy for Oscar, it can't have been easy to be humiliated like that in court, especially as the whole world is watching his sentencing. I wonder what the next talking topic from this prolonged sentencing will be.
