It's Been Two Years Since Mandla Passed

Zero Arrests Made In Mandla/Senzo Cases

It's an emotional time of the year for fans, friends and the family of late actor, Mandla Hlatshwayo. The ex-Generations actor was slain in May 2017 after being stabbed to death during an altercation in Soweto. Fast forward to 2019 and we are still no closer to finding his killers and exacting justice for his murder.

Painful as that might be to contemplate, Mandla's family is not the only one that is still waiting for answers. The family of the late Senzo Meyiwa is also patiently waiting on an update on their son's case. Senzo was murdered nearly five years ago (October will mark the anniversary) and yet we are no closer to finding the people who killed these two national icons.

The South African Police Services have not done themselves any favours in their bid to solve both murders, misleading the public with statements such as "We are confident" and "We are close". Let's take a closer look at what could possibly be holding up proceedings.

Mandla Hlatshwayo - Murdered May 2017

Jozi FM DJ, Mandla Hlatshwayo was murdered outside a pub in Soweto after trying to help four women who were being mugged. The attackers, instead, directed their attention towards Mandla before taking his life.

Since then, four suspects had been arrested but quickly released because of an apparent lack of evidence. His surviving brother, Lucky Hlatswayo has revealed that his family is still looking for justice.  He said to Daily Sun:

“Many people say time heals, but in our case we feel it doesn’t. We’ll never find closure knowing his killers are roaming the streets.”

Senzo Meyiwa - Murdered October 2014

Even before we began the hunt for Mandla's killers, the police had been looking (and struggling to find) the men who murdered Senzo Meyiwa at his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo's home. Even as recently as this year, Minister of Police Bheki Cele confirmed that we would have caught Senzo's killers by Easter.

And yet it is now May and nearly June and we're still no closer to solving this murder.

Where to from here?

At a time when faith in the South African justice system is at an all-time low, the news of these unsolved murders does nothing to instil confidence into the South African justice system. Never mind the fact that we are still looking for the men who took Lucky Dube's life, and don't even get us started on the tragic death of Matwetwe star, Sbu Khwinana.

Will these killers ever be caught or is it time for us to accept that this is one type of closure which we will never receive?
