The venue was an art gallery in Braamfontein, a very deliberate choice by the rapper turned YouTube sensation. Braam is known as a creative hub for students and other fellow musicians so it only made sense that Nasty C chose this as the place to debut another side of his artistry: Painting.
The venue was chosen because Nasty C wanted to also showcase his hand drawn art work on the walls of the gallery. "I started sketching even before I started rapping, so maybe around 6-years-old", Nasty revealed during an on stage interview before the show. "I wanted to show you guys [my fans] another side of me, another side of my artistry." His art work includes a portrait of his girlfriend, Sammie and 3 other illustrations of characters he imagined.
After the interview, it was time for Nasty C to bring out a pianist and a string quartet to play live renditions of select tracks off of his highly successful album, Strings and Bling. He also brought out gifted vocalist and his label signee, Rowlene, to sing "SMA" live. You may have seen a glimpse if you follow us on social media.
After the show, the already impressed group of invited media and influencers stepped aside as the fans took over. Word got out that Nasty C was in the area and university students from Braamfontein made their way to see their fave in person. Fans waited patiently outside - trying to get a sneak peak of the private performance through the window - until it was time for the premiere.
Nasty C premiered the SMA Trilogy with 3 music videos for his hit single, SMA. "One was shot in Joburg, one was shot in Cape Town, It was really important to show our diversity in these videos... The story is also really relatable for so many of us.", Nasty C mentioned earlier in the evening. The crowd sang along as they watched the videos play on the huge billboard above that iconic Juta and De Korte street intersection. The vibe was undeniable! So undeniable, in fact, that the police shut the whole thing down.
Nasty C clearly has big plans - he spent half the night hinting at upcoming collaborative projects with Universal Music set to only catapult his career that much further. His star is definitely on the rise and we can't wait to watch!
