2016 brought us many things and not all of them were good but one thing we are grateful for is the call to #OpenUpTheIndustry and the companies (namely in film and TV) that heeded the call.
One of the main arguments against #OpenUpTheIndustry was that a television cast or radio show with relatively unknown people wouldn’t bring in the numbers (which may be true) but shows like Is’Thunzi proved otherwise.
While other shows may not have been as bold, they did provide fresh faces the chance to prove their worth and come 2017, we’d love to see more of the same.
Here are a few of the faces we enjoyed seeing on screen and hopefully, we’ll see more often in the coming year.
She currently stars as Zama Ngwenya on Mzansi Magic’s hit soapie, Isibaya, after getting the part during an open call audition in an effort to find new talent.
Reports state that she has no prior acting experience but she has a face that was made for TV (and print) so we can’t wait to watch her grow.
Nombona on the other hand has always wanted to be an actress and it is a goal she has been working toward for as long as she can remember.
In 2016, she took home the golden horn (SAFTA) for Best Achievement by a Lead Actress in a Made for TV Movie (Ingoma, which aired on Mzansi Magic in February 2015) and has an upcoming role in Mzansi Magic’s new drama, Lockdown.
Most know Mtshali for her role as DJ Gugs on Isidingo but she has a lot more roles under her belt.
From playing Thandeka on the SABC 1 sitcom, Thandeka’s Diary, to acting in films such as Thina Sobabili, Mtshali has more than proven she has what it takes. Hopefully we’ll get to see how her acting chops have developed when she stars alongside Zola Nombona in Lockdown.
She currently plays the baby of the family in eTv’s Gold Diggers and was only recently given more of a role to play in the show.
Zwane actually made her transition from working behind the scenes to being on-screen talent after she repeatedly begged Johnny Barbuzano to give her a chance. Because of her persistence, she now has a role on eTV's Gold Diggers, you’ve gotta respect that hustle.
The young actor stars as Zimkihta’s brother on Gold Diggers and has already featured alongside SA’s leading lady, Terry Pheto. One can only assume what level of talent gets you in the same production as Miss Pheto.
Making the transition from winning a presenter search competition to acting can’t be easy, but judging from the fan reception to her role on Greed and Desire, Moletsane seems to have nailed it.
Modisakeng is gorgeous, no doubt about that but it’s her acting as Bassie alongside Connie Ferguson on Rockville Season 4 that made us sit up and take notice. Now we just have to wait and see whether or not there will be a season 5 and if she’ll be in it.
She recently got more on-screen time in her role as Ingrid on eTv’s Scandal but we have come to enjoy seeing Sandows on our screens.
Sandows’ co-star and real-life boyfriend also just got his debut but he is believable as Romeo Medupi. The extent of his acting talent remains to be seen but there’s only one way for us to find out.
