There are some beauty blunders we all make that might just be stopping us from looking our absolute best.
Here are some of the more common ones, and should you follow them, you too could look as good as Minnie Dlamini (pictured) always does (ok, maybe not, Minnie is just perfection! But it wouldn't hurt to try?).
Skipping the moisturiser. This applies to both your face and your body, and probably your hands too. It only takes a few minutes, but applying moisturiser after you wash your face or when you step out of the shower makes a huge difference. No more flaky, dry skin. Additionally, your face needs the moisturiser so that it doesn’t try to compensate by producing more oil. Yes, even those of you with naturally oily skin!
Going overboard on the perfume is another rookie error. That brand new scent does smell amazing, yes – but you want it to just linger slightly on your skin so people can smell it when they hug you or stand close to you. You don’t want people to notice your perfume a mile off or overpower them when they do get close.
There can’t be a single woman who hasn’t committed the beauty sin of not washing your makeup off at night. You’re tired, it’s been a long day, and you just can’t wait to get into your warm bed and fall asleep. Washing your makeup off seems like a huge effort on those nights, but if you can muster up the energy to wash your face or even use wet wipes to take off the worst of it, your skin will thank you for it. For the more unlucky amongst us, you’ll avoid breakouts or rashes, and for the rest you definitely won’t have that tired, dull look the next morning.
Not using sunscreen. The more mature crowd might remember days of using baby oil instead of sunscreen, or forgoing it entirely in favour of getting a beautiful tan. Hopefully by now most of us know that baby oil does nothing to protect your skin, and that tanning isn’t worth the effects on your skin, your health, or your ageing process. Even on a cloudy day, be sure to use sunscreen. It will protect your skin from harmful rays that can cause cancer and will age you prematurely.
Finally, mismatching your foundation is another very common beauty blunder. Remember that when you choose a foundation shade - you need it to blend into your neck as well, so test it over your jawline. The right shade will blend or disappear into your natural skin tone. If possible, go to a professional makeup counter to have them choose your shade. They’ll often give you samples too, so you can try them in natural light and make sure you’re still happy. When picking a foundation, be sure to consider your skin type as well. For instance, dry skin tends to do better with a liquid or cream based foundation, whereas oily skin would be better matched with a powder-based foundation.
