Celebrities to assist Marikana victims

Two South African celebrities have teamed up with a Johannesburg lawyer to help families of the Marikana victims.

Singer Ntsiki Mazwai, radio personality Kay Sexwale and lawyer Tracey Nixon have opened a trust account and created a website called Never Again for donations.

Speaking to the City Press this week, Mazwai said she came up with the idea after hearing government was not willing to pay the legal costs of the lawyers representing the wounded and arrested miners at the Marikana Commission of Inquiry.

“I then tweeted the idea and the response was so overwhelming. So Kay Sexwale and Tracey Nixon came on board and we jointly opened it. In fact we have already announced on the website that we have raised about R2 000 so far,” she said.

Mazwai said the money would be used to fund the legal costs of the miners and buy food and pay school fees for the children of the victims.

“This includes the families of the police officers and security guards who were murdered there. It is not about the miners only,” she said.

Mazwai said they planned to organise music concerts and other events to raise more funds.

“This initiative provides us with an outlet to do something, not just be angry at the situation,” added Sexwale.

Well done ladies.
