Disney got us all excited in 2017 when they announced the live-action remake of their 1994 classic, The Lion King. Yes, Beyonce, Donald Glover and other cast additions were exciting, but the joy in Mzansi was around the inclusion of a certain Dr John Kani on the cast (even though he would go on to be excluded from the cast photo two years later but we'll discuss this another day). As Lebo M affirmed earlier this month, The Lion King is a proudly South African story.
Our music is in the story; our identity is all over the theatre production, heck there are some people who even believe that the original animation was based on a South African game reserve. This time around, with the remake, we not only have Dr John starring as Rafiki and Lebo M on the Soundtrack; we now know that one of our very own designers, David Tlale, got to show off his work at this week's London Premiere of the new film.
David flew our flag high once again when he dressed Lion King actress, Florence Kasumba in a delightful number which she strutted all across the red carpet in full view of international media. Fans of Tlale's work will know that this is the second time he has worked with Florence Kasumba; the first time being the 2018 Black Panther premiere.
Check out the stunning garment he put together for her below:
David beamed with excitement when he spoke about dressing the Ugandan Disney star for the second time. “Florence is such an amazing star and I am honoured that she requested me again. I wanted to give her a look that is different but classic and timeless and stands out on the celebrity Disney carpet. The look speaks of Africa that is global, elegant and true to itself,” shared the designer.
This is just another big achievement that Tlale has added to his CV. Who do you think he will dress for South Africa's Lion King premiere this coming Thursday?
