Many know Rina Chunga as the brains behind many of the creations worn by Nomzamo Mbatha and Nomuzi Mabena but the creative heritage-inspired expression spills over into her personal life as seen in her wedding.
The 28-year-old Zambian-born designer recently married her long time beau in a heritage themed, Zambia-meets-South-Africa-via-Venda ceremony dubbed #KutamaFest. The pair also invited Top Billing to the festivities so you will also get to take a closer look in a few weeks.
Check out what went down as they got ready for the festivities.
She even designed her husband's suit.
And they hired a band to play some themed music for #KutamaFest
A local Facebook meme page had taken her wedding pictures and used them to make fun of Venda people but Rina was not having it. She posted a picture of herself and her husband and shut the hate right down.
The caption reads:
"I woke up to find some mzanzi meme page had collected pictures of our wedding and captioned them "when you marry a Venda man" . Ummm okay well Dimo is Venda so 🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️. It was funny but at the same time pissed me the hell off. I hate that when a black person decides to be themselves and do something rooted in their heritage it's seen as a joke. How can embracing our own culture in our own unique way be seen as a joke? It's only when you've been taught to hate yourself that instead of saying wow someone did things their own way you see a joke. Someone showed us we can be proud of being black and break the rules, nah people are like "I would never get dressed up and go sit on the fooor". When in your African tradition did a wedding mean a white dress and a ghost chair?. There are so many conversations to still be had about self hate in the black community. But hey until then I'll keep flying this torch and wear dreads to my wedding with wooden beads in my hair. I loved everything about our African Bohemian themed wedding and I can't wait to share more with you guys. I'm gonna keep leading with love #kutamafest"
Congratulations to the newly weds
