Kay chats to Khanyi Mbau

As my Uber pulled up to Black Olive, an events venue situated North of Johannesburg, I didn’t know what to think about the fact that I was about to have a one-on-one chat with thee Khanyi Mbau.

One thing I did know however is the fact that I have always wondered what it’s like to be Mbau’s friend and my colleagues here at ZAlebs echoe my sentiments. Not because of the glamorous lifestyle she leads but because she really just seems like she has  great energy.

I find Mbau sitting in a secluded room, waiting for her hair and make-up to be done for the upcoming Previdar shoot that she will be featuring in.

“I’m the most sluggish, relaxed person you can ever find,” she admits. Adding that people are often surprised by how she really is once they spend a prolonged amount of time with her. They expect glamour, drama and a firecracker personality but what they get instead, according to Khanyi, is one of the most chilled human beings you will ever meet.

Who can blame them though. Would you expect chilled vibes from a flame such as this?

Walking into Monday like!!! Happy week of love ❤️😘 LOADING!!! #💡

Misconceptions about who she is have followed her since she first stepped foot into the limelight and while “hate” was the order of the day whenever her name was brought up, she now evokes a more polarizing response among the masses.

Mbau has grown over the years, so one would assume the way she reacts to and handles the hate has changed but she says it hasn’t.
By the way do you know which social media star is related to Khanyi Mbau? He's actually her little brother.

And that is exactly why she isn’t phased by what people have to say about ‘Whose Show is it Anyway?’ (the Metro FM show she co-hosts with Somizi Mhlongo).

And she has noticed that South African’s don’t seem to like change, especially when it comes to personalities and characters on television and radio. But she believes with a bit of time, they will get used to it and they will learn to like it.

They’ll have to learn to like Mbau as she has settled into her career as an actress and media personality and has no intentions of retiring any time soon.

In fact, she will be starring in an upcoming thriller film for Ster Kinekor called ‘The Red Room’ which she estimates will be released in August this year. No word about her role in the film however.

She also hinted at some kind of sequel for 'Happiness is a Four Letter Word' which is set to start filming this year and will be scheduled for release next year.
