Musicians Association wants Arthur to go

The South African music industry is finally taking a stand against abuse as the Musicians Association of SA (MASA) and the Gospel Music Association of SA have requested that kwaito star and 999 label boss, Arthur Mafokate must recuse himself or be recused from the SA Music Rights Association (SAMRO) board until he is cleared by the courts of assaulting singer Cici.

Mafokate has been emroilled in a bitter legal battle with ex-girlfriend, Cici (real name Busisiwe Twala), who he has been accused of physically assaulting and injuring after he allegedly drove off in his car with Cici still attached to it, causing her serious injuries in the process.

“It is about time that the music and broader creative industry join in on the #MeToo campaign,” stated both bodies in a joined statement.

Speaking to City Press, SAMRO’s Andre le Roux went on record to say “SAMRO remains deeply concerned over the allegations that are faced by its board member, Mr Mafokate, relating to the alleged assault of Ms Twala. The allegations against him go to the heart of the violations that South African women face on a daily basis.”

SAMRO stated that they will make their decision on Mafokate once the case has run its course in a court of law.

Mafokate continues to deny the charges, insisting that Cici assaulted him instead. Allegations which Cici has denied.
