Mzansi Magic's top 2016 dramas

Themba Ndaba

Mzansi Magic has grown leaps and bounds since it was first launched and this is most evident in the shows they brought us this year. From shows that switch between two different eras to a cocaine dealing family, here's a list of some of Mzansi Magic's best dramas this year.

Is’Thunzi

This teen-centric weekly drama is the channel’s latest gem and we’ve beeen dying to find out how the girl’s friendship develops as well as if they each get what they want, especially Winnie. Following the #OpenUpTheIndustry debate, we're also happy to see a ton of new faces both on-screen and behind the scenes.

We might be sounding a little biased but Is’Thunzi is shaping up to be Mzansi Magic’s best drama for 2016.

Igazi

While the show had a few technical faults, it ended up beating Isibaya to become Mzansi Magic’s most watched show. We have a feeling that Nomarussia and Scotho had something to do with that.

Rockville Season 4

When it was announced that Rockville would be returning for yet another season, we had no idea where they were going with it but they managed to surprise us. Not only did they give new talent a chance in the form of Kamo Modisakeng and Ayanda Thabethe’s acting debuts but they brought the drama with the likes of Shona Ferguson, Sello Maake ka-Ncube and Gail Mabalane. They even managed to end the season off on a cliff-hanger that may just have us asking for season 5.

The Queen

Continuing with Ferguson Films productions is this high octane drama that sees Connie Ferguson and Sello Maake ka-Ncube reunited in the roles of brother and sister. We appreciate the LGBT twist however, as Maake ka-Ncube is playing the part of a homosexual character.

We also get our dose of new talent in the form of Celeste Khumalo, who plays the part of Linda and Katlego Mohuaduba who plays Sepati.

Greed and Desire

Fans of Mzansi have been watching this telenovela for months and while we’ve never seen a single episode, it’s popularity has earned it a spot on this list. Fan reviews make it seem like the show is all about the drama and that’s why they seem to love it.

Saints and Sinners

Guys! This is one of the more emotional dramas as your favourites are clear from the start. Siyabonga Radebe and Ntathi Moshesh take on darker roles than they usually do and you can’t help but hate each of their characters.

Thuso Mbedu shines in her portrayal of Boni and has gone on to conquer roles in soapies such as Scandal and shows such as Isthunzi.

It’s Complicated

This show stays true to it’s name and although it kept the drama coming last season with all the Intersexions-type relationship drama, we were given deeper story lines this season, allowing us to get more insight into each of the characters. Especially Mandisa’s story line portrayed by Samela Tyelbooi.

Last night on #ItsComplicatedMzansi Ntando is pregnant! Who is the father? Stay tuned to find out. mzansimagic.tv
