Nomsa Mazwai can't wait for King Tha Decks

Hi Nomsa, we hope you are doing well this week!  You’re known as an activist, poet, and singer: which is your favourite description of yourself?

I define myself as an artist-  a creative, because even when I am doing my social activism, I am creative in my approach and I am interested in finding ways to reach people, so I prefer the word creative, but social activist, singer and all the other titles still describe me.

If you were not any of the descriptions above, which career path would you follow?

I'd be a professional swimmer. If my life went another way, I would definitely be a professional swimmer, because I love swimming and I swim all the time.

What are you most looking forward to in your upcoming show with Nakhane Toure?

The show itself is to promote the 'My Work' campaign, which is a campaign of the United Nations to get people to participate in the formulation of the next global agenda. So I'm really excited to promote the campaign and to perform some of my classics like 'With You', and all the songs that people know me for.

Of all the songs you have recorded, which one is your favourite?

My favourite song is 'Butterflies', because who doesn't want to fall in love? It's a nice feeling when you have still got the butterflies.

Do you find people comparing you to your famous sister Thandiswa Mazwai. Would you say having Thandiswa as a sister put pressure on you?

It does put pressure on me and people compare us all the time, but I think that's just how people are. No matter what family you come from, people always compare siblings. I take it as it comes, but I would like people to know me for who I am.

You've worked with the likes of Black Coffee, Rapsody and 9th Wonder. What has been your favourite colab?

My favourite collaboration is definitely with Black Coffee. He is one of the kindest human beings I've ever met in my life. He is so sweet and it was just so easy working with him. He is a wonderful energy, a wonderful spirit and an inspiration to people in South Africa.

Did you think you would come this far in your singing career?

I have thought I'd be this far in my career and I want to be further. I am really investing in my career and performing more.

Who else would you like to work with in the near future?

I'd definitely like to work with K.O 'Caracara' because he is just killing it at the moment. I'd also love to work with 'Malee'. She has a beautiful voice, and she is another Black Coffee discovery. I'd also like to work with Cassper Nyovest , but everyone wants to work with him right now, so I'm not quite sure about him [laughs].

What are you reading right now?

A collection of Steve Biko Memorial Lectures. It's really fascinating to see how Steve Biko has inspired different people in the world. The reason I'm interested in his life is because I am running a petition to have his autopsy report given to his family, because right now they are in the hands of two white guys.

Where’s your favourite place to eat, and what is your favourite dish?

My favourite restaurant is a nice dinner restaurant called 'Nice' in Parkhurst. My favourite dish is something I make myself called Umbogonqo.

What will you be getting up to at Easter?

This Easter I am not travelling or anything, so I will be spending time at home and enjoying Joburg and seeing some shows. I like going to theatre, so I will see what is happening in Joburg.
